Cathie Watches TV

Clearly I have been in a serious blogging funk. I …

Clearly I have been in a serious blogging funk. I keep thinking of all these things I want to blog about and then I’m just too tired or I couldn’t be bothered or I’m too busy with stuff to get around to doing it. Obviously I had much more time on my hands early in the year. Anyway, this gorgeous man, woke me up out of my funk last Thursday. He is absolutely fantastic in ER and has totaly revitalised the whole show. I have been watching for 13 years, and the last four years have not been that crash hot, but this year is wow!. My only complaint is that they are trying a bit too hard to be like Grey’s with all the indie rock and montages, but I can deal with that, because of the fantastic acting. I would say that Stamos is rivaling McDreamy for hottest TV Dr.

This week I also put in 2 hours at my 6yr olds school, decorating the door to his class room to make it look like a gingerbread house. A total waste of time and money in my opinion, but all the 1st grade classes do it and it’s a sort of competition. All it does is bring out the worst in the mothers. It’s ridiculous. One of the Mum’s working in our group, took over the whole thing, redesigned the whole thing and alienated everyone. If I had actually cared I would have walked out. But because my whole life doesn’t revolve around being the “best” volunteer the school has ever seen, I just put up with it, gave my time and then left. I usually go in and help the teacher very Thursday morning, I photocopy all the homework and any other admin type stuff she needs and then if there is time I get to help the kids with reading or what ever they have going on, which is the most enjoyable part. I don’t mind doing it at all if it frees the teacher up to actually get meaninful stuff done, but I do object to the fruitless stuff.

The kids decorated a real gingerbread house this week without too much mess. Usually I have to glue it all together with the icing, but I pulled thos one out of the box fully assembled, so it was a quick project.

So, on to a bit of TV talk. The Amazing Race is over and the male models/former drug addicts won in a bit of a foregone conclusion. It was still faily exicting at the end, but I thought it was a bit of a let down once the Miss America’s were out of the competition. They really made it interesting. February brings the next Amazing Race which will be All Stars. I’m really looking forward to that. Survivor is fantastic at the moment. I think Ozzy should win it all. He’s nice, and he’ can fish and swim and win challenges. Yul thinks he’s going to win it, but I think Ozzy should be able to talk home the million. I think the last episode is on Sunday, but I’m not sure. I can’t imagine they would have the final episode on Christmas Eve.

Everything else good is off the air until after the holiday break, so there is nothing much esle to say about TV, except that ABC moved Lost to the 10:00pm time slot when it comes back in February because they are scared of American Idol.

The rest of the week is going to be a whirlwind for me. Tomorrow I have to finished up the holiday shopping and then Thursday I’m volunteering at school and making a couple of hundred periogies with my friend Lisa in the afternoon. Friday is dentist, 4yr old’s holiday party at pre-school and then taking 6 yr old to a birthday party. I’m collapsing on Saturday and then Sunday I’m baking all the holiday cookies and Monday we leave for two days in New York City. We are taking the kids to see the Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular and staying over night and going to the Statue of Liberty the next day. We are driving up Monday morning. We are also ging to see the tree in Rockerfeller Centre and the eighty bajillion people roaming the streets.

So, I’ll be back with news and photos of NYC next Wednesday!!

ER was great this week and has actually been bette…

ER was great this week and has actually been better in the last 3 episodes than it has in the last three seasons. John Stamos is a very welcome new addition to the cast. Not only is he hot, he’s turned into a good actor and he had a bit of a Jekyll/Hyde character in the show which is interesting. I have been watching this show religiously since it started in 1993, and it seems to be back to some of it’s old glory this season.

Grey’s Anatomy had the best episode of the three this season. Meredith’s speech at the end about wanting to be treated like “a friggin’ lady” was priceless and made her much more likeable. This is such a great show, and I have said it all along, it’s the sensational acting from every cast memeber that makes it. Sometimes I still don’t like the dialogue very much, but they can all pull it off so well it is totally believeable.

Survivor was good, but not totally thrilling, although the Cook Islands themselves seem totally thrilling. I would love to go there and swim in that water.

Friday Night Lights.

I did not like it at all. Totally predictable and a yawn fest. Tom Shales in the Washington Post LOVED it – I should have been warned. He ususally hates everything and the last time he liked something I hated it as well. Anyway, if you’ve been living under a rock – Friday Night Lights is based on the very popular movie by the same name and written by Peter Berg who wrote the movie. It’s about small town Texas and the high-school football games that go on every Friday night. Apparently it’s a huge thing in these Texas towns and everybody in town becomes invested in the outcomes of the games and also goes out to watch the games. In this episode some local business owners talked to the coach at length about winning the game and the State championship and the star quarter back got injured and stretchered off the field and the understudy quarterback (or whatever they are called) had to go on for the last 3 mins of the game and of course saved the day. Gee, never seen that in a movie before. So the big cliff hanger was “will the star quarter back ever walk/play football again?”. Snore. I couldn’t stand it. Firstly I was appalled that adults and business owners could care so much about high school football. Get a satellite dish and broadband, people. Delve into the outside world. Take a road trip to Houston or Austin and go to a decent restaurant. Live a litte. Second, watching young actors fake play football is totally boring . I will not be watching it again. I’m sure it rated through the roof. Maybe it’s a cultural thing?

Survivor was good last week, although I was very surprised to see that the tribes merged so early on, in episode three. It sort of spoiled the whole “separated along race lines” beause the contestants didn’t really have time to get overly attached to their team members.

I haven’t watched Monday’s Studio 60 yet – I’ll probably get to see it on Friday. Amazing Race was fantastic as usual, and hilariously, last nights Gilmore Girls got a mixed response from me and Mrs Names, I loved it and she thought it was a bit boring and long winded in parts, although we both agree that Lauren Graham is a great actress.

I DID NOT start to watch the Bachelor and and will not be watching he Bachelor. I have had enough of all the stupidity. However, I’m not above reading about it, and according to realityblurred.com the “Italian Prince” is actually from New Jersey and has only been to Rome once before – hahahahahahaahah.

On a more somber note – I turn 40 this week.

Here’s watch I’ve been watching the last week Sur…

Here’s watch I’ve been watching the last week

Survivor – It’s been good. I don’t really think the whole race thing is going to be an issue. However, even though I love Survivor, I think it’s time for this to be the last season. It would have to get way more contraversial to stay interesting for the very long haul.

My Name is Earl – Funniest show on TV. Love it. The whole thing is brilliant.

Kidnapped – Ok , with lots of potential. Bit of a shaky start last week, but I’m going to watch it again, I want to see what happens.

Grey’s Anatomy – The new season started last Thursday and it was good!! Not fantastic, but good. I think they spent a lot of time this episode setting stuff up for the future.

Six Degrees – Held my interest for the pilot. I don’t know how it’s going to fare in the long run, but I’ll keep watching to see how it unfolds.

The Amazing Race – best reality show on TV and they have really ramped it up this season. The challenges are much tougher and the contestants are a good mix. Only two models this season and they are recovering drug addicts, so you can forgive them for being models.

Desperate Housewives – Eh. It was OK. Eva Longoria was a standout as usual, but all the others have horrible storylines, that just aren’t that interesting. The worst thing that show did was kill off Rex.

Brothers and Sisters – I liked the pilot and I’m going to keep watching. I really love Sally Field, she is always fantastic. Calista Flockhart is also in it, and she is very un-Ally McBeal, but you can’t help noticing her botox. Her face doesn’t move, which is very strange for an actress.

Already on the way out is Justice, which is a real shame because Victor Garber is great in it and it’s an easy to watch crime/legal drama. I thought it was very entertaining. Fox should move it to a different timeslot and I think it will do better.

Poor Bill Clinton. Just sticking up for himself in a Fox Sunday interview with Chris Wallace, and now being villified for “exploding like a volcano” Hardly. My favourite part was when he told Wallace to wipe the smirk off his face. The Daily Show summed it up brilliantly in their “Moment of Zen” last night with a clip of Wallace asking Clinton why his administration failed to kill Bin Laden and then a clip of Katie Courice asking Condolezza Rice how the Secretary of State gets asked out on a date.

77% of people are not offended by Survivor.

OK, so those 77% percent of people answered a very scientific poll on TMZ.com (which if you are not reading hourly – you are crazy!!). Personally, it didn’t offend me either. I found it highly enjoyable. It was just like all other survivors – many different personality thrown together on and island and forced to get along and try and make fire. Cao Boi is totally crazy. He is Vietnamese and on the “Asian” team, and he kept saying all these awful things and upsetting his fellow teammates. It wasn’t like any one team was slagging off another team, they were all too focused on themselves and building their shelters and getting fire, and letting poor chickens run free. There is some girl called “Flicka” on the whitey’s team, and she let the chickens out, after some other guy on the same team (who by the way sounds EXACTLY like Alan Alda), “stole” the chicken from another team when they were jumping off the boat. He paid for it though by being sent to Exile Island.

Survivor: Cook Islands is looking exteremly promising and was a good way to kick off the TV Watching season.
